Blocking IP addresses of spammersEdit

Hi, Walter,

After talking with Tom, I understand the logic of a three day block. I suppose the six months block was an emotional reaction to the profanity inserts. Thanks for your comments.

I don't know where to reply to messages Edit

Hi Walter. Thanks so much for your categorization work. I really appreciate it. Can you tell me how to deal with talk pages? Am I supposed to be replying on my talk page? Tom Sponheim 18:40, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Massive linking now from the Archive Edit

Hi Walter. Check out this page. Every country, name, and organization now links to the Wiki. We'll see what happens. Capitalization is not always correct, but I think we can sort that out with redirects until the names are corrected in the database. Tom Sponheim 22:53, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Wow! You've been busy. I'll keep a look out. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 23:01, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Linking to the Category:Who%27s_who_in_the_solar_cooking_movement page from the Main Page Edit

I see now that marking the pages of individuals with the correct category tag allows the Who's who page to be created automatically. Would you be able to change the link on the Main Page so that it points to this auto-generated page? Tom Sponheim 16:42, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Can you also create a category like "Countries involved in solar cooking" so we can add that to the page for each country to also auto-generate the "Country by country resources" page? Tom Sponheim 18:56, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
The root category is Category:Browse. To link to a category, type a ":" immediately after "[[", e.g., [[:Category:Browse|Root category]] is displayed as Root category. To make a new category like Category:Countries involved in solar cooking, type [[Category:Countries involved in solar cooking]] (with no leading colon) at the bottom of an article to be so categorized. The new category will appear as a redlink somewhere on the page after you save it. Then, click on the redlink and add the parent category, Category:Solar Cooking Directory to that page.
The parameter after the pipe has a different function in categories than it does in article wikilinks. In article wikilinks, the parameter after the pipe is displayed inline. In categories, it is used to index the category but is not displayed. If not specified, the category name will be indexed. For more, see Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Categorization.
A final word: It is trivial to rename an article. But, unless a robot program is available, a category can be changed only by editing each article in the category. Consequently, it is worth spending some time and effort in an attempt to get category names right the first time.
I'll go make the edits I described above so you will have an example to look at.

Thanks, Walter. Can you also add the category to the orphaned country pages and to Template:Country page? Tom Sponheim 20:22, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Done both (I think). Walter Siegmund 21:04, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Is there a way to create a category for NGOs that would create a page automatically divided by country like this page? Tom Sponheim 20:39, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
I don't think so. You could alphabetize by country using the country name as the pipe parameter (as above). The first letter of the country would appear as a subheading with the article underneath. But, that is all that can be done in a straightforward manner, to my knowledge. Walter Siegmund 21:04, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
After more thought... You can create continent categories and country subcategories and put articles in the latter. That would be more or less equivalent to Non-governmental organizations. On Wikipedia, both categories and list articles are common. Sometimes it is fairly obvious which approach is to be preferred. However, it seems to be the norm to tolerate a fair amount of overlap. This is especially true on Commons. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 04:59, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Adding history to the country pages Edit

Hi, Walter. If you have time and the desire (no problem if you don't), it would be great if you could go through this document and add the history to the country pages that I haven't hit yet. That's what I was doing when I left. Of course if you've got more important things to do on the site, don't bother with this. Thanks! Tom Sponheim 20:14, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tom: Can you edit your message above again please? The link to the document was not saved. Thank you, Walter Siegmund 16:31, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Sorry I missed your message. I don't know what happened. Let's try again. I'm in town. Walter Siegmund 18:38, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for setting up the featured article stuff! Edit

I wouldn't have a clue how to do all of this, so I really appreciate it that you're taking this on! Tom Sponheim 17:04, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Solar cookers Pil Kaar in the Chad and Primrose Edit

I made the change in the picture description for the Primrose. Your suggestion to put the picture of the cooking woman in the Chad on the main page is welcome but I do not know how. Bernie

Thanks for the improvements. We haven't implemented featured images yet, but you can nominate and comment on featured articles at Solar Cooking talk:This week's featured article. By the way, if you put four tilde's, ~~~~, at the end of your comment on a talk page, the software will add your name and time to the comment. Walter Siegmund 21:15, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Hows it going here? Edit

Looks like my stub templates have been a little useful. Just popping in to see how things are going. I'll check back, or shoot me an email if there is anything that might be needed.--RangerDave 07:32, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, RangerDave; I haven't had time to do much more than to keep featured articles updated and respond to queries. I should have more time the week after next. The other editors and I really appreciate your help, here. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 20:34, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

I don't understand Catalan and my Spanish is poor. Your page says you speak some English; could we try that, please? Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 01:14, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

New categories Edit

Thanks for adding the categories. The SCI main office has created a massive list for other purposes. These should come in handy here. Thanks! -Tom

Help with new categories Edit

Hi Walter. I hate to bother Tom right now. I made a new recipe category for Fruits (begun with a recipe that is really good with almost any meal, so it's not really "dessert", nor is it "vegetable"), but while it appears on the main recipe menu, it is not appearing on the sidebar category menus within each recipe category. Do you know how to fix that? Also we need a new recipe category for Grains and Beans/Pulses. I want to post a recipe for cornmeal mush (maize meal porridge, polenta), and it really doesn't fit any of the categories, nor do any of them focus on other recipes that primarily feature whole grains and/or dried beans/pulses. It would be a good to have a place to post recipes for things like porridges, pilafs, bean or pea or lentil dishes, etc. If you can start the category properly so it appears in the places where it should, I will put at least a couple of things in to get it going. Thanks ahead of time if you can help with this!SharonID 10:53, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi SharonID; It is a pleasure to hear from you. "Grains and Beans/Pulses" is interpreted as a subarticle Pulses of the article Grains and Beans because of the "/" character. Since that is unlikely to be good, I dropped the "/Pulses". It can be renamed, if you wish. Please see the diffs in my edit history to see what I did.[1] I'm happy to help with things of this sort. Search Engine Problem Edit

Hey, Walter, since you seem much more technologically astute than I am, do you have any idea why I can't get my new [EZ-3] wiki page to come up in the search engine? Did I do something wrong, is something wrong with the site, or has my little I-Book gone crackerdog? I'm using it for youth projects, and I want kids to be able to find the page even if they lose their handouts. Thanks for any help you can give.SharonID 08:32, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Walter, I thought it might be good to update the site about me. Actually I haven`t created this site, but it is good for me unless the information is up to date. Therefore I will come back here and then to keep the site up to date.

I tried to add documents but I failed. Could you give me a hint how to do this?

Thanks so far.

Sunny regards, Rolf

Rolf; I'm sorry I missed your question. But it appears that you succeeded subsequently.[2] Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 13:52, May 4, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, Walt for letting us know about Appropedia's kind remarks. Tom Sponheim 22:25, March 18, 2012 (UTC)
