Template:Talkarchive Hi, Tom! Just checking to see if this method of communication works... I added the Solar Cooking Basics, and in general I'm pleased with how it came out. There are small improvements that could be made (e.g. the gifs on "How" have a beige background; the table in Pasteurization could have some space around the cells, etc.) but these are minor. And here's one little example of synergy: the Pasteurization page mentions WAPIs, so I put in a link to a page obviously called WAPI, then clicked on it, thinking I'd have to create it. It was lovely to find it already there! --Beth Ogilvie 02:02, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Let's try this method and see how it works. Edit

Thanks for all the work you're doing. Now that we have the basics up and a few pages that I've put up, we should see which pages lend themselves to collaboration. I noticed today that the Supplies page would be a good one since other people know about supplies that we possibly don't. And, of course, we need to try out a country page. -Tom

Categories Edit

Hi Tom; thanks for telling me about this project. It looks like a great start! At a bit of a loss as to how I might contribute, I found a page with suggestions.[1] One comment was to use categories to help with navigation. So, I added categories to a number of articles. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 03:42, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

I finished Category:Who's who in the solar cooking movement. It provides an alternative to a list article such as Who's who in the solar cooking movement. Both have advantages. The list article is easy to reorganized and annotate. The category is less work for the person adding an article since only that article need be edited. Just add [[Category:Who's who in the solar cooking movement|last_name]] to the bottom of the article. The default is to alphabetize by the article title; adding |last_name alphabetizes by whatever you substitute for last_name.

Using talk pagesEdit

BTW, messages should be left on talk pages, not user pages. Mine is User talk:Wsiegmund. If you end your message with four tildes, ~~~~, the Wikia software will add your name and the time stamp automatically. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 04:38, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Walter. Thanks so much for your categorization work. I really appreciate it. Can you tell me how to deal with talk pages? Am I supposed to be replying on my talk page? Tom Sponheim 18:40, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
I prefer to keep a discussion on a single talk page. Otherwise, it is a pain to reconstruct by reading contributions in the timetagged order on more than one talk page. It is a pity that the wiki software doesn't provide a better solution. One solution is to paste the reply back on the original talk page (as I have done above). Another is to put a notice on your talk page stating your preference (as I did just now). I'm pleased that you have found my work helpful. Thanks for ending your message with four tildes, ~~~~. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 19:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Copyright tags Edit

A number of files are missing copyright tags. While it is probably less likely here than on Wikipedia that copyrighted violations will occur or be pursued vigorously, I think it is a bad idea to allow it to grow to the point that it becomes intractable. But, perhaps we should discuss this a bit before I start tagging images with copyright violations. Walter Siegmund 05:41, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

DisambiguationEdit

I copied {{Template:Otheruses4}} from Wikipedia. It seems to be the main disambiguation template and gives different results depending on whether you give it 0, 1 or 2 parameters. I used my sysop powers to protect it and a couple of related templates. It really isn't justified now, but a vandal can make a big splash by editing a much-used template. Edit

Hi Tom, really great work you're doing on this site. What about Image:Wiki.png? It's just a spontaneous draft by me; delete or overwrite it, if you dislike it :-) Greetings --rieke (Wikia Comunity Support) 17:32, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Rieke-Thanks so much for offering us the logo. It is not quite distinct enough for us to use. It is not apparent to a person unfamiliar with solar cookers what it is in the photo. When we get more of an idea of what we want in the way of a logo, can we contact you? Thanks again! Tom Sponheim 17:35, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Sure, just let me know if you've got a new idea, and/or if you need any help. And of course, you can easily change the logo by yourself. You just have to upload another PNG file over the exiting one under the name Image:Wiki.png (note the size, about 145×150px). In general, a wiki logo is better when it's not a photo but a kind of simple symbol, I know, but for the meantime this may fit well instead of the default Wikia logo, or not? ;-) To be clear: This is just a draft and is only meant as a little motivating help, not as a definite logo. So I would be more than happy - really - if you would substitute it with a more distinctive and own one :-) (it took me less than 2 minutes to create it, btw) --rieke 17:50, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
The above discussion was copied to Forum:Watercooler. Walter Siegmund 18:29, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tom, the new yellow logo looks great! Remembers me a bit of some friendly South American symbol, but I don't know which one exactly :-) Could you also adapt the according image/license information on this page?

In addition I've made a tiny favicon from your version now. You might need to reload pages and/or clear your cache to see the change. Greetings --rieke 09:10, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Is there anything we have to do to get this icon to show up in the Address box when we navigate to the site? Tom Sponheim 17:51, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
No, not really ;-) Such interface changes normally take some time to show up constantly for all users. But clearing your cache and reload of a page should help. --rieke 07:16, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Welcome template Edit

Hi Tom; I revised the new user welcome template, Welc. To use it, type {{subst:Welc}} ~~~~.

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome, welkom

Welcome to Solar Cooking! We invite you to add new articles and/or contribute to existing articles and discussions.

If you are new to Wikia or wikis in general, be sure to visit the "Community portal" for an outline of some of the main parts of the site and a link to pages that tell you how to edit.

Do keep an eye on the "recent changes" page, where all edits and their authors (anonymous or signed-in) are listed. Bookmark it, maybe. (And help delete spam - unpleasant but a fact of life.)

Discussion of any aspect of the site, and enquiries, can be made at the watercooler or on the "discussion" page associated with each article.

Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically add your name and the date to your message. This lets readers know "who to talk to" and whether your message is current. If you write on a user's "talk" page, that user will get an alerting message on next visit. If you need help, leave a note on the help desk, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

P.S. It would help some of us to know how you discovered this site.

Walter Siegmund 18:58, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Walter. I'll definitely use it! Tom Sponheim 19:56, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
You are most welcome. Thanks for taking a look at Forum:Index and improving it. You might wish to put the help desk and watercooler on your watch list. You can edit Template:Welc, in case it isn't obvious where to find it. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 20:39, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Forum Usage Edit

Tom, let's continue all these how-to discussions in the Helpdesk or Watercooler forums, otherwise we'll all have to watch each other's Talk pages. The Forums seem pretty simple to use. --Beth Ogilvie 17:32, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Copyright tags Edit

I added the PD copyright tag to your image Image:CooKit Solar Cooker in front of hut.jpg. If this is not the correct license, please choose a more appropriate one. See Help:Image copyright tags, or ask me for assistance. Walter Siegmund 04:41, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

That looks correct. Thanks! Tom Sponheim 06:21, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Forum:Organization_of_this_wiki Edit

Beth and I are having some discussions at Forum:Organization_of_this_wiki that might interest you. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund 19:58, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

We'd like your input Edit

Tom, pls take a look at Talk:Brit Bakken Oedegaard... Thanks. Beth Ogilvie 16:41, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

There are two items on Talk:Main Page#Changes to this page that I'd like your opinion on (having decided to consult before changing the main page :) --Beth Ogilvie 19:53, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Can you ping me on this when I get back so I have some time to think about it? Tom Sponheim 20:10, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
Sure. --Beth Ogilvie 20:14, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
