Haiti portal

Great to see the work you have been doing on the site! We're wondering if you should be adding info to the Haiti page instead of the new page you created. Can you tell us more about yourself? Where are you located. Feel free to email me at Tom Sponheim (talk) 20:03, July 12, 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Tom -- I'm located in San Diego, California, and am a US Navy Sailor (so I move around a lot).  I've been involved in fundraising for charities that work in Haiti off and on since the big earthquake in 2010, and so I'm interested in relief efforts in Haiti; my goal is to promote solar cooking in general (especially using the medium of Esperanto), and solar cooking in Haiti in particular, and I'm also starting to think about ways solar cookers could be used to help the homeless here in San Diego (and I see, with absolutely no surprise at all, that there is already a page for that here).  I created the "Haiti Portal" page so that I could use it as a visual way of "thinking out loud": trying to organize my own personal thoughts as I'm inspired by what I've found on this awesome site so far.  So, for example, if sometime down the road I actually start, or otherwise get involved in, a new project, I won't be reinventing the wheel.  The page really should probably be a blog, or some other type of page, I suppose: I'm sorry I've chosen the wrong type of page in my eagerness to get started before actually exploring the site and its possibilities.  As for the Haiti page: as I get more in tune with where the information comes from and expand my own network of contacts, I'll definitely focus on that page (if someone else doesn't beat me to it).  Thanks for the welcome! Great work!

Hello again. We've been watching your work on the Wiki. It's great to see all you have done. Can you tell us more about yourself? Where are you located? Tom Sponheim (talk) 00:22, August 1, 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Tom -- I'm in San Diego, attending military school.  I am trying to get orders to remain in San Diego, but one never knows.  I should know in August.  I'm an active-duty Sailor in the U.S. Navy and am trying to take advantage of the down-time to do interesting stuff.  I've only recently gotten interested in solar cooking, so I'm a relative newbie.  But I think it's important.  So while I'm blundering around your Wikia (I'm so sorry about the newbie mistakes I'm making and appreciate your patience), I'm also learning about solar cooking and its extent in the world.  Other interests: geocoin and challenge coin design, bagpipes, and Esperanto.  Speaking of the latter, I was thinking that a category called "collaboration tools" might be a good idea -- I noticed at least one thing ("Appropedia ") marked as an NGO when it can more properly be called an online resource or collaboration tool, and of course I'm interested in the use of Esperanto as a tool when dealing with solar advocacy in areas where multiple languages are spoken.  What do you think?  Katjo.Mencanto (talk) 00:46, August 1, 2013 (UTC)

NGOs using CooKits

Thanks for marking these. I've edited the CooKit page so that any NGO you mark automatically shows up there. Tom Sponheim (talk) 23:05, August 2, 2013 (UTC)

No problem!  Now I just have to get through "S". (shudder).  Katjo.Mencanto (talk) 23:10, August 2, 2013 (UTC)

Contact info needed

Can you find contact info for Harald Røstvik? Tom Sponheim (talk) 21:20, August 4, 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Tom -- Done. Katjo.Mencanto (talk) 22:28, August 4, 2013 (UTC)

Could you track down this project?

We got a membership application from "Cal Poly Scheffler Reflector" but without further info. Can you see what you can find on this and add an article? Tom Sponheim (talk) 18:07, August 12, 2013 (UTC)

You got it, Boss.  I'll get on that tonight and update as soon as I have something (or don't, as the case may be). Katjo.Mencanto (talk) 18:13, August 12, 2013 (UTC)
I see now that we have this here: Cal Poly Scheffler Reflector Tom Sponheim (talk) 19:52, August 12, 2013 (UTC)
I was about to come back and ask you about it -- I found it, too.  Looks like there's a decent amount of basic info there.  Is there anything more that you'd like me to do here?  Katjo.Mencanto (talk) 03:18, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

Track down contact info for these people

Seyoum Goitom
Satyapriya Mukhopadhyay

...more to come if you're interested in doing it. Thanks. Tom Sponheim (talk) 22:54, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

Seyoum Goitom - I've sent a message to kumatoo (their page for Seyoum Goitom is at  If that fails, I'll write the Dutch Embassy, who provided him funding to work on his parabolic cooker.
The good folks at kumatoo unforutunately don't have contact information for him.  And the Dutch Embassy in Eritrea phased out its services in late 2011.  This has apparently been taken over by the Dutch Embassy in Sudan, so I've written to them for assistance.  More as events develop! UPDATE: As of this writing, still no response from the Dutch Embassy in Sudan. : ( Katjo.Mencanto (talk) 18:05, August 30, 2013 (UTC)
Dr. Satyapriya Mukhopadhyay - Done.  As for more: bring it on. : ) Katjo.Mencanto (talk) 01:51, August 14, 2013 (UTC)

Hi Kate, (yes?)

Uploading files need to be done in a pdf format, because wiki sees it as an image, the same as a picture. So if someone sends you a Word doc., you need to save it first as a pdf. Then upload it as a picture.

It gets a little tricky next. After it appears with a file name, you change out the word, File, with the word, Media. Then add a vertical bar (|) after the file name, and with no spaces, type the name of how the title should appear, creating an active link to the pdf file.

Here is an example: (You will need to open it in Source mode to see the formatting)

An Analysis of Solar Cooker Usage - Bashir Ahmad

You can see that a space and bar and space is added, then two vertical accents ('), not quotation marks, and the authors or publication name, and two more vertical accents. This puts their name in italics.

Does this answer your question?
