United Religions Initiative - May 2009

In May 2009 URI visited the Bufuula community to introduce solar cooking. Despina and Hannington are explaining how solar cookers work.

United Religions Initiative (URI) is a global grassroots interfaith network that cultivates peace and justice by engaging people to bridge religious and cultural differences and work together for the good of their communities and the world.

In partnership with Solar Cookers International and the Solar Connect Association in Uganda, we assist communities to use the power of the sun to cook food and pasteurize water for the benefits of the people and the environment by saving the trees cut down for charcoal leading to deforestation and also respiratory diseases caused through open fire cooking.

News and recent developmentsEdit

  • April 2015: A group within URI, the Peace Kawomera Cooperative Society Cooperation Circle working in Mbale, Uganda, is currently concerned with planting more trees and growing forests, since their coffee thrives under the shade trees provide. Also, the project of constructing solar dryers will enhance the quality of exported coffee as well as help the process to become more efficient while still being environmentally-friendly.
  • May 2009: Over the weekend we visited the Bufuula community in eastern Uganda in the Jinja district and carried out an awareness campaign with the local community in a bid to make them aware of solar cooking, cooker adaptation, and production.
