Teachers Without Borders - Nigeria is a great gift to the world of solar cooking. The head of the organization is in charge of meeting the UN Millenium Goals for Nigeria (everyone lives on at least $1/day, zero emissions, education for all, no HIV, gender equality, etc). He has a program of 300 ambassadors in rural villages, all local heros like Emmanuel, and hopes to have 1200 by the end of the year. All of them will have solar cooker workshops, materials, and blueprints in their hands shortly, to judge by his excitement level."[1]
News and recent developments
- June 2008: Report from email: "I have been using the materials on the SCI website and have began a "Solar Cooker Literacy" course to enable me fully understand the idea and be able to teach and promote among the network we have here. We are holding a special seminar for our local Millennium Development Ambassadors in Abuja on June 26, 2008 and the Solar Cookers project will be presented by Emman Ande, especially the introductory concepts and how to produce the cookers locally as well as usage. His presentation shall include a practical demonstration for all the local Millennium Development Ambassadors. Also,a two day training course for young Millennium Development Volunteers comes up June 27-28, 2008 and the same presentation shall be extended to them as part of the efforts to "ensure environmental sustainability" in our country. We are also exploring strategies to organize workshops in local communities on this SCI solar cookers project for rural dwellers in the days ahead. It is our hope to work toward organizing a "training of trainers" that will teach and promote this project in all the states in Nigeria. In any case, we shall be sending you reports and pictures after the June 26 - 28, 2008 seminars for MDAs and MDVs in Abuja as well as the future plans and commitment from participants."
