Water pasteurization can help prevent some of the 4 billion illnesses and 2.2 million deaths due to diarrheal diseases that occur each year in the world. Children are especially susceptible, with 1.7 million deaths annually attributed to contaminated water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. Worldwide, 1.1 billion people do not have adequate access to clean water.
