Water pasteurization can help prevent some of the 4 billion illnesses and 2.2 million deaths due to diarrheal diseases that occur each year in the world. Children are especially susceptible, with 1.7 million deaths annually attributed to contaminated water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. Worldwide, 1.1 billion people do not have adequate access to clean water.

Water pasteurization is a heating process that renders water safe for drinking by humans. At 65°C (149°F), all of the germs in water that can cause disease in humans are killed. At around 70°C (160°F), milk and other foods are pasteurized. Heating water to 65°C, instead of to boiling, produces safe water twice as fast whether solar or fuel energy is used.
