[edit] News and recent developments

  • April 2008: SolarGren Media will be promoting solar cookers and solar cooking technologies in the east Africa countries of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania between the months of June and August. Between July 15 and August 31, 2008, as a grassroots media advocacy, SolarGren Media shall be organizing various community events in schools, churches, cooperatives and villages about the benefits of solar cooking as a cheap, viable green technology that will help propel Africa out of poverty as well as help conserve the environment. Dubbed the "Jua Pika Caravan", a Swahili phrase which translates as "cook by the sun Caravan", the community events will be moving from town to town and will take participants to various stops within the three countries, a schedule diary of which is available. It will be posted on the SolarGren Media blogsite once all logistics are done. At the end of these series of events, SolarGren Media shall be hosting a solar cookers exhibition in Kisumu, Kenya, on the shores of Lake Victoria at the beginning of September, 2008. Details of this exhibition event are being finalized with various institutional and governmental bodies and shall soon be communicated. SolarGren Media shall be hosting local interaction meetings where it will be exhibiting recent products and as well as train local youth and women groups to equip them in the assembly and use of solar cookers. SolarGren Media will also hold demonstrations of panel and parabolic solar cookers and produce articles for the media on these activities. Rising fuel costs depleted natural resources for traditional cooking methods in rural Africa are driving a large African population to discover cheaper, easier to find and more efficient energy for cooking, and solar cooking is fast taking root. SolarGren Media is calling upon international partners - manufacturers, donors, sponsors, technologists and volunteers - and inviting participation to help in this effort by donating their skills, resources and time in making this a successful event. For manufacturers, SolarGren Media has various marketing promotion packages that include a guaranteed media presence in each of the three countries. SolarGren Media shall also create linkages with local groups, cooperatives, communities and entrepreneurs to further market your products. For donors and sponsors, SolarGren Media will ensure that your support reaches the intended recipient group who in turn shall benefit from more information and knowledge on the benefits of solar cooking, which is good for the environment in Africa. For technologists, these series of events shall provide you with an ample opportunity to showcase and experiment with a new offering that could provide greater potential for solar cooking in east Africa and beyond. For volunteers, SolarGren Media will guarantee satisfaction that your contribution of time, skills and resources has been put in to good use; to promote and develop solar cooking in Africa. SolarGren Media needs volunteers in grassroots media advocacy, trainers and community organizers.
