SLO Solar Cookers is a solar cooking club in San Luis Obispo, California.
Rosemary Wilvert writes:
For those who enjoy solar cooking, nothing is more satisfying than to share this pleasure with others. Five locals from different walks of life have teamed up to present solar cooking classes at community gathering spots around San Luis Obispo County. Two teachers began with demonstrations in their homes, a recreation hall and coffee houses, and soon received invitations from Cal Poly State University, Earth Day in the Plaza, Cuesta Community College, and the Botanical Garden. As the audiences have grown, so have the number of teachers; our aim is to teach others to teach others . . . . Our newest member is from a professional cooking school.
Along with tasty samples of foods cooked on the spot with no fuel, we share a short video from SolarOvens.org, showing the environmental benefits of solar cooking. We share copies of Solar Cooker Review, including its catalog in the back, and answer questions. We point out that just about any recipe can be used, and the fun is in the experimentation. The participants taste for themselves how varied and delicious the foods are.
I have been cooking by the sun, nearly everything we eat, for several decades, even in the winter. I made my first two ovens from cardboard, and then a few years ago bought an SOS Cooker from Solar Cookers International. Made from recycled soda bottles, it's my favorite, for light-weight portability and efficiency. It has paid for itself, as I hardly ever heat my kitchen oven. My husband and I take it on trips; it makes a hit in the campground!
Even a modest lifestyle in the U.S. is plushy compared with those in most of the developing nations. My solar oven, greywater system, backyard garden, etc, themselves, won't make a huge difference in the world, but they are a tiny bit I can do. The effort is so rewarding.
