The Renewable Energy Initiative is a non-governmental organization established in 2011, working with the goal of slowing the rate of deforestation in Somalia. The trees are being burned to produce charcoal for cooking fuel. Solar cooking can provide an important, low-cost alternative cooking method for poor communities, where residents spend an ever increasing portion of their resources for charcoal fuel.
