The Pastoralists Integrated Development Programme (PIDP) is a registered Kenyan charitable trust that enhances the social and economic welfare of pastoralists. Working with community-based organizations, PIDP spearheads environmental conservation through solar cooking promotion in nomadic pastoralist districts in Kenya. PIDP was founded in 2004.

News and recent developments

  • January 13-15, 2011: Solar cooker training was provided to 19 conservation workers known as “game scouts” representing conservancies, group ranches, trust funds and communities in several pastoralist districts of Kenya, including Trans Mara, Laikipia, Kajiado and Kajiado North. During the workshop, PIDP's Charles Leshore lectured on the negative health and environmental impacts associated with cooking over firewood and how this is affecting nomadic Maasai in Kenya. He then conducted solar cooker demonstrations and led group discussions on when and where solar cooking is useful. Leshore hopes that the participants will go on to teach their colleagues and other community members. Several have already asked Leshore to conduct follow-up trainings in their respective districts. Solar cooking was just one component of the 3-day workshop, titled “Integrated Wildlife Ecosystem Management for Sustainable Conservation and Livelihoods.” The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (Kenya) Ltd., also known as the Giraffe Centre, hosted and co-sponsored the event.
