Mount Madonna Science Laboratory and IT Center

From Solar Cooking

Jump to: navigation, search

Science teacher, Lisa Catterall, continues her report from Africa Our visit to Creative Minds International Academy in Jos, Nigeria closed yesterday with songs, speeches, and some tears. Emmanuel Ande, proprietor of the school, announced the official opening of the Mount Madonna Science Laboratory and IT Center at the school. Members of the parent-school forum (their PTA), all the school administrators, faculty, and the SS1 class greeted the announcement with a standing ovation.

I am in awe of the open-mindedness and quick intelligence of the school community. With one short lesson, the senior science students were able to section and stain onion root tips and focus a microscope. The questions they asked were analytical and full of depth, and the teacher, who had also never used a microscope, was able to help and advise his students although we'd only spent a short time together one-on-one. I felt like any idea that was presented here was processed 100-fold.

In the computer lab, the proprietor and principal worked closely with us to set up seven new laptops and install a new 220V router switch this week; by Friday, they were troubleshooting themselves. We were able to hold a browsing session with all thirteen computers connected to eGranary in the afternoon; the students appear to have come a long way in their computer skills since eGranary arrived in November.

We completed two Solar Cooker workshops, and we were able to network with a youth conference on Climate Change and Entrepreneurship that occured in Jos this weekend. The leaders of the group plan to work with the school to take the idea of solar cooking further.
