John McGreevy, a recent graduate of Elon University in North Carolina, spent three weeks in Haiti, two before the earthquake and one after. His studies included a double major in biology and environmental studies, and he became a member of the 2010 Periclean Scholars. His research has focussed on renewable resources.

Prior to the earthquake his time was spent conducting research on solar cooking. He took ten solar cookers to the rural village of Layaye, put on demonstrations and delivered cookers to families. He also recorded his findings in order to understand the potential for solar cooking in that area. He is helping raise awareness in the struggle to preserve natural resources in areas where the past emphasis has been deforestation for the purpose of charcoal production in Ghana as well as Haiti. His research was presented at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research in Montana and a photojournalism article was published in Visions Elon University's environmental magazine.
