Wikia recommends that the main page not be protected. The idea is that we're encouraging people to be bold and start editing, but the first page they see (in many cases) is a page that cannot be edited.
I suggest that we ease into it by changing the main page from "sysops only" to "block unregistered users". If we all survive that, in a few weeks we can consider opening it up to everyone. Of course if it starts to get repeatedly trashed we can tighten it up again.
Those of us who come from a traditional programming environment where we have total control over web page content & appearance may find this a difficult step, but relinquishing control is part of the wiki way. I'm sure it would be good for us to practice it. :-))

- I'm up for trying it as registered users only. Tom Sponheim 21:05, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. Vandalism so far has been minimal, knock on wood. Walter Siegmund 04:15, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
