  • Thursday, January 15, 2015: (Bhayander) The Bhayander based NGO, Keshav Srushti, is committed to spreading awareness of solar cooking. Under the banner of Maha SuryaKumba, they will be gathering students from 500 schools across Mumbai, and then plan to take the festival to remote tribal villages, to hopefully this year, reach the magic number of 100,000 solar-powered prepared meals! Keshav Srushti has been accredited by the Guinness Book of World Records for having conducted the largest solar oven cooking class in January 2014 with 3,639 participants from 62 schools.   • January 26-28, 2013: (Vadodara) There will be a three-day solar food processing workshop at the Muni Seva Ashram in Goraj, Vadodara, India. The Ashram is known regionally for its environmental programs and extensive experience with organic gardening. Rolf Behringer reports that the German NGO WISIONS has agreed to support the establishment in India of the first regional Solar Food Processing Network. He is helping to organize the event. The aim of the Solar Food Processing Network (SFPN) is to establish a global network of interested parties (NGOs, governments, farmers, and manufacturers) to develop and promote efficient methods of solar food processing and conservation.   • July 2011 - June 2012: (Maharashtra) International opportunity for testing solar cooker designs - Originally announced as a one-time event Oct. 11-13, 2011 with a related conference, the solar cooker competition has been cancelled, and instead there will be a year-long opportunity for having solar cookers and fuel stoves tested free. India’s Promoters and Researchers in Non-Conventional Energy (PRINCE) group has updated standards for solar cookers, developed in conjunction with input from SCWNet members. These universal testing standards will be used to evaluate the cookers by simulating real world conditions. Designers, manufacturers, NGOs and individuals are invited to submit solar cookers for testing, and need not be present for the tests. While there will be no cash prizes, solar cookers will be rated on thermal performance, cost of manufacture and transport, and user convenience. Send cookers anytime between now and June 2012 to: Prof. Ajay Chandak, PRINCE, Shamgiri, Opp Swagat Lodge, Agra Road, Deopur, Dhuli – 424005, Maharashtra, India. Include your usual instructions for consumers. If you wish your cooker returned, please arrange to cover return shipping costs.   • September 28 - October 2, 2011: (Madras) IIT Madras seeks solutions to create a Stored Energy Solar Cook Stove - The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras will be holding the 13th edition of Shaastra, the technical festival of this premier institution, between September 28th and October 2nd, 2011. A main focus of this year's Shaastra is a design competition for a stored energy solar cook stove. The designed prototype should be capable of storing energy in sufficient volumes for functioning for many hours past sunset (ideally 14 hours). The stored energy can be discharged at a minimum of two uses (at different times), and must be of sufficient capacity to provide two traditional meals (while traditional meals vary across regions, the prototype must be versatile enough to accommodate such variations) for a family of five.   • November 22-23, 2014: (Ashikaga): The first Solar Cooker Convention in Japan will be held at the Ashikaga Institute of Technology. This initial convention is directed at the solar cooking pioneers in Japan. Future conventions will be open to all interested in solar cooking. Building the convention this way will enable the organizers to create a network of the original enthusiasts and promoters to help structure this young endeavor.   • Saturday, September 6, 2014 (Noda): The Chiba prefectural Shimizu High School, with sponsorship from the Kikkoman Corporation, will be holding the first High School Solar Cooker Competition. The intent is to help students cultivate sensitivity to the environment, ecology, and disaster management. By building their own solar cookers and competing with their new solar cooking techniques, the students also become aware of their own food culture.   • February 11, 2012: (Tetu, Nyeri) RSSS Self Help Group is launching and demonstrating the RSS Solar Water Heater, the product of 2 years of village-based research which is cheap, highly efficient, and with a totally effective large surface area whereby the household package worth US$10 will heat to near-boiling point 20 liters of water in 10 minutes of sun shine and cook 10 liters of tea, coffee or cocoa in 10 minutes while the average institutional package of 100 square meters of effective surface area and worth US$ 1 000 will be shown to heat 4 000 liters of water in 1 hour of sun shine (20 000 liters in an averagely sunny day).   • Saturday, February 26, 2011 (Eldoret) Eldoret Student Projects, in Eldoret, Kenya will hold a ceremony to honor the students who invented a new model of solar panel cooker in the Eldoret Students Solar Cooker Science Pilot Project. Students will receive certificates and other awards, there will be speeches and celebration, and guests will learn about solar cooking and see solar cookers as well as celebrating the kind of smart young people we need to help solve the challenges the world faces. Groups include Roots, Greenpeace along with a number of others. People who are part of movements or local groups actively working towards achieving climate justice, or making any difference in their communities towards achieving a more just and safe future for all are encouraged to apply.
