CELEBRATING World Environment Day [2008], the Cyprus Green Party offered solar-cooked lunch at Grigoris Afxentiou Square in Limassol. The lunch, which included roast chicken, potatoes, eggs and rice, was cooked before the eyes of passers-by, with hand-made cookers using energy from the sun.
“The technology works with shiny surfaces, mirrors or silver foil that focus the sun on the specific point, heat gathers, and we use that heat to cook the food,” said Ioanna Panagiotou, Press Officer of the Cyprus Green Party.
“The food is healthy as nothing else is added and the heat gathered is at the same level as a conventional oven,” Panagiotou added.
Regarding the time needed to cook using a solar cooker, the Greens said that provided the weather is sunny, meat is cooked in two-three hours, and other types of food take much less time.
The solar cookers were developed by Andreas Fassoulides and Kyriakos Antoniou, founders of Re-new, a technology workshop on renewable sources of energy. The two men have developed four types of solar furnaces, the solar box cooker, solar panel cooker, solar basket cooker and parabolic solar cooker, all of which can be purchased by the public. Re-new also offer workshops for people to learn how to make their own solar cooker.
“The dramatic climate changes on our planet and our personal concerns about the future of our children are the reasons we created the Re-new workshop in Cyprus. Working with renewable sources like the Sun, Wind and Biogas, we offer popular technology for everyone who wants to reduce CO2 emissions in the environment,” said Kyriakos Antoniou.
