In late 2011, the UK based peacebuilding charity Cord began a solar cooking project in the Farchana Refugee Camp in collaboration with the US NGO Jewish World Watch. This project has brought thousands of CooKits to the refugees there.

However, during the rainy season, with stormy landscapes and cloudy skies lasting from June to October, the cookers are relegated to occasional use. A pilot scheme with Afrah ovens, in operation in eastern Chad since 2010, was identified as the perfect choice.
