Start by choosing a cooker design type based on your requirements. This table shows the most common types. See Compendium of solar cooker designs for more selections.
| Type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
| Box cooker | You can cook in multiple pots simultaneously, | Construction time much longer than panel, Can't fry foods. |
| Panel cooker | Easy and cheap to make. | Lower temperatures. Vulnerable to wind. Can't fry foods. |
| Parabolic cooker | Cooks as fast as a conventional stove. Can fry foods. | Tricky to make without imported materials. Requires periodic realignment to the sun. Can damage eyes. |
