Hot Spot 2007

A Better Focus Co. manufactures the Hot Spot, a concentrating solar cooker that utilizes reflective film stretched across a 4' diameter dish. A vacuum is pulled inside the dish, causing a concavity in the reflective material, focusing sunlight to a 4-6" spot of over 1000 F at a focal length of 8-10 feet. Demonstration video is at http://www.abetterfocus.com/HeatFluxdemo.html. This develops about the same amount of heat as the small burner on a gas-fires stove. The dish must be readjusted priodically as the sun moves across the sky. Cooking accessories are provided, and a "heat pod" has been developed to store thermal heat for later cooking or heating use. A low-cost cardboard-backed model is being offered to qualifying agencies for in-country manufacturing. An 8' diameter version has been developed for power applications. Sunglasses must be worn when using or observing the operation of this dish.
